Whether you're experiencing increased hair shedding, noticing thinning areas of your scalp, or beginning a hair restoration treatment plan, understanding the hair growth cycle is one of the most important parts of setting realistic expectations.
Unlike your skin or nails, hair does not grow continuously. Every hair follicle on your scalp follows a carefully regulated cycle of growth, transition, rest, and shedding. At any given moment, thousands of individual hair follicles are all in different phases of that cycle.
Understanding how this process works helps explain why some hair shedding is completely normal, why hair loss occurs, why treatments take several months to show visible improvement, and why consistency is essential for long-term success.
In this article, we'll explain the four stages of the hair growth cycle, discuss what influences healthy hair growth, and review why understanding this process is the foundation of successful hair restoration.

The follicle still has to progress through its normal biological cycle before thicker, healthier hair becomes visible.
This is one of the biggest reasons patients become discouraged too early. They expect immediate improvement when, in reality, biology requires patience.
Understanding the hair growth cycle helps explain why successful treatment is measured over months rather than weeks.
Hair Follicles Work Independently
One of the most remarkable aspects of the scalp is that each hair follicle functions independently.
If every follicle followed the exact same schedule, you would lose all of your hair simultaneously before it started growing back.
Fortunately, that doesn't happen.
Each follicle has its own internal clock.
At any given time:
Approximately 85 to 90 percent of scalp hairs are actively growing.
A small percentage are transitioning.
Some are resting.
Others are naturally shedding.
Because every follicle is on its own schedule, your hair maintains a relatively stable appearance despite the fact that hair is constantly being replaced.
For most healthy adults, losing 50 to 100 hairs each day is considered completely normal and simply reflects the natural hair cycle.
Hair loss becomes concerning when:
More follicles enter the resting phase than expected.
The growth phase becomes progressively shorter.
New hairs become thinner with each cycle.
Damaged follicles fail to produce healthy replacement hairs.
Understanding this distinction helps explain the difference between normal hair shedding and true hair loss.
The Four Phases of the Hair Growth Cycle
Every healthy hair follicle progresses through four distinct phases.
Each stage serves an important purpose in maintaining healthy hair growth.
Phase 1: Anagen (The Growth Phase)
The anagen phase is the active growth stage.
During this phase, cells within the hair follicle divide rapidly, producing a new hair shaft that continues to lengthen over time.
For scalp hair, the anagen phase typically lasts between 2 and 7 years, although genetics largely determine its exact duration.
Approximately 85 to 90 percent of the hairs on a healthy scalp are in the anagen phase at any given time.
Hair generally grows about half an inch (1 to 1.25 cm) per month, although growth rates vary among individuals.
The longer a follicle remains in anagen, the longer and thicker that hair can become.
This is one reason why some people can grow hair well past their shoulders while others struggle to grow it beyond a certain length.
Many common forms of hair loss, particularly androgenetic alopecia (male and female pattern hair loss), shorten the anagen phase. As a result, hairs have less time to grow before entering the next stage of the cycle.
Phase 2: Catagen (The Transition Phase)
The catagen phase is a short transitional period between active growth and rest.
This phase typically lasts two to three weeks.
During catagen:
Hair growth stops.
The lower portion of the follicle begins to shrink.
Blood supply to the follicle decreases.
The hair detaches from its nourishing structures.
Only about 1 percent of scalp hairs are in the catagen phase at any given time.
Although relatively brief, this stage is an essential part of the normal hair cycle because it prepares the follicle for its resting period.
Phase 3: Telogen (The Resting Phase)
Once the follicle completes the transition phase, it enters telogen.
This resting stage generally lasts two to four months.
During telogen:
The hair remains anchored within the scalp.
The follicle is inactive.
No additional hair growth occurs.
A new hair begins forming beneath the resting hair.
Approximately 10 to 15 percent of scalp hairs are normally in the telogen phase.
Several factors can cause an unusually large number of follicles to enter this stage at the same time, including:
Significant illness
Surgery
High fever
Rapid weight loss
Childbirth
Emotional stress
Certain medications
Nutritional deficiencies
When this happens, increased hair shedding often occurs several months later, a condition known as telogen effluvium.
Phase 4: Exogen (The Shedding Phase)
Exogen is the final stage of the hair cycle.
During this phase, the old hair is released from the follicle while the new anagen hair continues developing underneath it.
As the new hair grows upward, it gradually pushes the old hair out.
This is why finding hairs in your brush, shower drain, or pillow is completely normal.
Most people naturally shed between 50 and 100 hairs each day without noticing any significant decrease in overall hair density.
The important point is that shedding itself is not the problem.
Healthy hair follicles replace the shed hair with a new one.
Hair loss occurs when follicles fail to produce healthy replacement hairs or when each new hair becomes progressively thinner over time.
Why Increased Shedding Doesn't Always Mean Hair Loss
One of the biggest misconceptions about hair loss is that every hair found in the shower or hairbrush is a sign that you're going bald.
In reality, hair shedding and hair loss are not the same thing.
Hair shedding is a normal part of the hair growth cycle. Every healthy hair follicle eventually releases its old hair so a new one can take its place.
Temporary increases in shedding can occur for many reasons, including:
Physical or emotional stress
High fever or significant illness
Surgery
Childbirth
Rapid weight loss
Certain medications

This type of shedding, known as telogen effluvium, typically begins two to four months after the triggering event because hair follicles first enter the resting phase before shedding occurs.
Although increased shedding can certainly be alarming, it is often temporary. Once the underlying trigger has resolved, many follicles gradually return to their normal growth cycle.
However, if shedding continues for several months, thinning becomes progressively worse, or new hair growth fails to replace the hair being lost, a comprehensive evaluation is recommended to identify the underlying cause.
What Happens During Pattern Hair Loss?
Not all hair loss occurs because hairs are shedding excessively.
The most common cause of hair loss in both men and women is androgenetic alopecia, also known as male pattern baldness or female pattern hair loss.
With this condition, the problem is not simply losing more hairs.
Instead, the hair follicle itself gradually changes over time.
Each growth cycle becomes shorter than the one before.
As a result:
The follicle spends less time actively growing hair.
Each new hair becomes thinner.
Hair shafts become shorter.
Pigment often decreases.
Thick terminal hairs gradually become fine, miniature hairs known as vellus hairs.
Eventually, some follicles may stop producing visible hair altogether.
This process is called follicular miniaturization and explains why pattern hair loss develops gradually over many years rather than suddenly overnight.
The earlier treatment begins, the greater the opportunity to preserve existing follicles before significant miniaturization occurs.
Why Hair Restoration Takes Time

Factors That Affect the Hair Growth Cycle
Healthy hair growth depends on much more than genetics alone.
Numerous internal and external factors influence how well hair follicles function and how long they remain in the active growth phase.
Some of the most common contributors include:
Genetics
Genetics play a significant role in determining hair density, growth rate, and susceptibility to androgenetic alopecia.
Hormones
Hormones such as testosterone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), thyroid hormones, estrogen, progesterone, and cortisol all influence hair follicle function.
Hormonal imbalances can contribute to increased shedding or progressive thinning.
Nutrition
Hair follicles are among the most metabolically active structures in the body.
Adequate intake of protein, iron, zinc, vitamin D, B vitamins, and other nutrients is essential for healthy hair production.
Iron Status
Low ferritin levels are one of the most commonly overlooked contributors to chronic hair shedding, particularly in women.
Even without anemia, depleted iron stores may affect healthy hair growth.
Thyroid Function
Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can disrupt the normal hair cycle and contribute to diffuse hair thinning.
Stress
